For those who are seriously interested in welding as either a hobby or a vocation, consider having both a wire-feed welder and a SMAW (stick) welder; along with training in both applications. There are instances where one is better suited to a job than the other. A good wire-feed welder, such as the Hobart 210 handler, that has shielded-gas capability is particularly useful for thin material work and heat sensitive material. A stick-welder is better suited to thicker material.
